The Bishopric of Bremen & Verden were ceded to Sweden at the Westphalian Peace in 1648 and turned into a hereditary dukedom. Since the Hanseatic city of Bremen itself was separate from the bishopric, the Bishopric Mint was placed in the town of Stade. In 1712 the now dukedom was conquered by the Danes and in 1719 ceded to the Duke of Hanover (better known as George I of Great Britain).
