SWEDEN. Stade (Lower Saxony). Taler, 1686-IS. Stade Mint. Karl XI. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
Dav-5814; KM-27; SB-2a; Delzanno-713; Hagander-298; Bruun Auction-1530; Bruun-12442. Weight: 28.77 gms. Mintmaster: Jacob Schröder. A very rare one-year type, this coin exhibits excellent eye-appeal with a lightly golden hue.

The Hanseatic City of Stade fell under Swedish rule in 1648. While no official Swedish coinage was produced there, the city itself did on two occasions mint silver coins: Firstly in 1676,when Schillings and Sechslings were minted, at a time when it was occupied by enemy troops; and secondly in 1686, when the city itself minted Double and Single Talers. The issuing of coins in the name of the Holy Roman Emperor did not please the Swedish king (although several other cities did precisely that, Stralsund and Wismar, for example), and the minting was quickly stopped, further adding to the scarcity.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Estimate: €7000 - €8000
