GERMANY. Bavaria. 8 Ducats, 1598. Munich Mint. Maximilian I. PCGS MS-63.
Fr-187; Wittelsbach-775; KM-MB135. Weight: 27.73 gms. Obverse: Full-length armored and crowned portrait of Saint Henry holding globus cruciger and scepter; Reverse: Arms of Bavaria and Pfalz topped with elector hat, date flanking arms. An INCREDIBLY RARE issue, this lovely Mint State example delivers a glossy brilliance and crisp, well-rendered detail. A testament to the abilities of the roller press, invented only a few decades earlier and first used for the manufacture of circulating coinage in the nearby Hall Mint, this beautiful multiple Ducat features the standing figure of Saint Henry and reverse coat of arms struck in bold and intricate high relief. Milled 16th-century gold types are exceptionally elusive and always astounding to behold; they appear entirely distinct from the average contemporary hammered issue in terms of quality of strike and manufacture. Slight wispiness across the open fields, consistent for the grade, is noted, though this minor feature does little to detract from the overall appeal. An impressive gold issue that should effortlessly capture the attention of specialists in German coinage, or gold RARITIES more generally, as this example is tied with only one other example between PCGS and NGC as the finest graded representative.

Estimate: €125000 - €175000
