ROMAN PROVINCIAL. CILICIA, SELEUCIA AD CALYCADNUM. Trebonianus Gallus.
Bronze AE28, AD 251-253.
Obv: AVK ΓA OYIB CABIN ΓAΛΛOC, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: CЄΛЄYKEΩN TΩN ΠΡΟC KΛΔN, Athena advancing right, thrusting spear at serpent-legged giant throwing stones at her.
Very Fine; some surface striations and encrustations, otherwise a strong example of the sought-after type, a good opportunity to acquire a Gigantomachy.
On the reverse of this coin we see a skirmish between Athena and a Giant with serpent legs, possibly Enceladus, from within the greater battle known as the Gigantomachy, in which Giants and Olympian deities fought for control of the cosmos. It is a favourite scene of many ancient Greek artists, and is repeated across a variety of media.
