NORWAY. Penny, ND (1093-1103). Unknown Mint. Magnus Berrføtt (Barefoot). NGC MS-64.
Schive-T:7; NM-7; NMH-56; Josefsen-p. 98; Bruun-9021; Weight: 0.45 gms. A simply incredible survivor from one of the rarest and most sought-after of all Norwegian kings. With its amazing luster and lovely toning, this piece needs to be seen to be believed.
The provenance of this historically very interesting coin is second to non. It formed part of the only coin hoard ever found on the Faroe Island. The treasure that consisted of 98 silver coins buried between 1070 and 1080 was found in 1863 and published shortly thereafter in "Annaler for nordisk Oldkyndighed og Historie" by the Danish Numismatist, Christian Frederik Herbst, as nr. 45 (Plate I, 2).
Magnus III Olafsson Barefoot is the last king to fall in battle abroad and is often referred to as the last Viking king of Norway. He led several campaigns in the West and ensured Norwegian control over the Hebrides and Orkney. With all probability the treasure at Sandur was brought to the Faroes in connection with one of Magnus' campaigns.
