One of Only a Few Types Attributed to Inge Haraldsson
NORWAY. 1/2 Penny (Bracteate), ND (1136-61). Inge I Haraldsson (?). NGC MS-64.
Schive-VII:55; NM-cf. 15/1 (1976); NM-cf. 28 (1992); Simensen-Fig. 73; Bruun-9098; Weight: 0.14 gms. A slight chip at the edge removes nothing from the fact that this is an absolutely stunning near Gem example with a lovely toning. Exceptionally rare, and one of the only Bracteates that carries a proper legend, R E X.
This is one of the few types that has been attributed to Inge Haraldsson, known as Inge the Hunchback. A deformity he according to the Danish chronicler, Saxo had gotten after being dropped on the floor by a maid during infancy. The style of the portrait is unusually good and bears resemblance to the Danish Bracteates from around 1150.
