Remarkably Preserved Magnus Lagabøter Penny
NORWAY. Penny, ND (1263-80). Magnus Lagabøter. NGC EF Details - Environmental Damage.
Schive-IX: cf. 1-2; NM-26 (1976); NM-2 (1992); NMH-216; Bruun-9164; Weight: 1.70 gms. This is the first two-sided type struck in Norway after about one and a half century with only bracteates being issued. All coins struck for Magnus Lagabøter belong to the most highly coveted of Norwegian medieval coins, with examples as remarkably preserved as the present being considered unobtainable.
Magnus married the daughter of the Danish King, Erik Plovpenning, after practically having abducted her from a monastery, but is otherwise known as a king who ruled by law rather than by the sword, hence his nickname, Lagabøter (the Lawmaker).
