NORWAY. Penny, ND (1285-90). Oslo Mint. Håkon (V) Magnusson as Duke. NGC EF-40.
Schive-X:5; NM-32:1 (1976); NM-1 (1992); NMH-240; Bruun-9186; Weight: 1.37 gms. A very rare coin with an exquisite, dark patina and sharp details.
Håkon, king Eirik's younger brother, ruled areas around Oslo and Stavanger as a duke from 1280 to 1299, with the right to issue coins of his own. After taking over the throne in 1299, Oslo gradually took over the functions of capital from Bergen. On this especially interesting variant, Haakon is wearing a Ducal crown in the shape of a wreath of roses.
