A Rare Survivor of Unsurpassable Beauty
NORWAY. Skilling, ND (1510-1522). Nidaros (Trondheim) Mint. Erik Valkendorf. NGC MS-63.
Galster-183; Sieg-6; NMD-1; Schou-11; Schive-XVIII:5; Bruun-9261. Weight: 2.32 gms. Mintmaster: Fully lustrous, brilliantly struck and highly detailed. A "must be seen to be believed" survivor of unsurpassable beauty. Of the utmost rarity with only 6 examples recorded of which this is the best. The other five are all in public collections: two in Denmark (National Museum), 2 in Norway (Bergen and Oslo) and one in Sweden (Royal Coin Cabinet).
Remarkably, the 6 known examples have been struck from five different sets of dies, indicating that the original mintage, which is believed to have taken place at the Bishop's house, can't have been completely insignificant. The fascinating obverse shows the Norwegian patron saint, Olaf Haraldsson trampling on a dragon, and on the reverse is seen the arms of the Danish noble family of Walkendorf surrounded by a legend with the name of the Archbishop.
