Splendid and Otherwise Unobtainable Hvid
NORWAY. Hvid, ND (1510-22). Nidaros (Trondheim) Mint. Erik Valkendorf. NGC AU-58.
Galster-184; Sieg-5; NMD-6; Schive-XVIII:13; Schou-14; Bruun-9262. Weight: 0.64 gms. A highly desirable piece, astoundingly well-struck and with traces of original luster. Among the late medieval Norwegian types, the Hvid from Erik Valkendorf has always stood out as something completely unobtainable. With only two other examples recorded in public collections in Copenhagen and Bergen, it is almost a miracle that the present example is not just there but actually wonderfully well preserved.
When Crown Prince Christian was sent to Norway as governor, Valkendorf accompanied him as chancellor, and when Gaute died in 1510, Valkendorf took over the position as Archbishop in Nidaros. Eventually Valkendorf however had a fall out with the now king Christian II and was forced into exile.
