Highly Attractive and Very Rare Gimsøy Mark
NORWAY. Mark, 1545. Gimsøy Mint. Christian III. NGC EF-40.
Hede-2; Sieg-3; NMD-5; Schou-7; Bruun-9301. Weight: 9.40 gms. Mintmaster: Jørgen Kock, the younger. A very attractive example with indigo and abricot hues enhancing the lovely cabinet toning. Extremely rare, with only three believed to exist in private collections, including the example sold in first sale of the L. E. Bruun collection (lot, 1173, EF-Details), which is however struck from different dies (Schou 6). The one not in the Bruun collection is holed.

This important but highly elusive type was struck at Gimsøy in the former nunnery, near Skien in Telemark county, presumably from local silver mined at Gullnes. The mint was only in use from 1544 to 1546 when the buildings burned down and the silver mine in Gullnes dried out.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 316 in his collection.

Estimate: 30000 - 40000
