Illustrated in Most Major Reference Works on Norwegian Coins
NORWAY. 4 Skilling (Pattern), 1644. Christiania Mint. Christian IV. NGC VF Details--Holed.
KM-cf. PnB19 (incorrectly listed as copper); Hede-21 (plate coin); Sieg-21 (plate coin); NMD-142 (plate coin); Schou-110 (plate coin); Bruun-9500. Weight: 1.01 gms. Mintmaster: Peter Grüner the elder. The contemporary hole only adds to the mystery surrounding this UNIQUE and highly important pattern illustrated in most major reference works on Norwegian coins.
Three very different 4 Skilling patterns were struck in 1644, but none of them were set into production. All three are only know in one example with this one being the only one in private hands (the other two are in the National Museum of Denmark). The present is the only one bearing a portrait, while the other two have the Norwegian lion on the obverse and the denomination, IIII or IV on the reverse.
