Of the Utmost Rarity and Importance
NORWAY. 1/8 Speciedaler, 1654. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC EF-45.
KM-49; Hede-13B; Sieg-9.2; NMD-143; Schou-11; Aagaard-35.1; Bruun-9686. Weight: 3.41 gms. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner. Engraver: Hans zum Busch. An immensely inviting piece, sharply struck on an even flan and exhibiting a delightful cabinet toning. A one year type of the utmost rarity and importance with the only other recorded example being the one at the Danish National Museum.
At a brief glance this type look similar to the equally rare dates of 1649 and 1650, but between the rear legs of the Norwegian lion can be seen Frederik Grüner's initials. Following the death of his father, Peter Grüner, Frederik took over the position as a Mintmaster in January 1651.
