Amazing Double Taler of Paramount Rarity
NORWAY. 2 Speciedaler, 1659. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
Dav-3606; KM-A52; Hede-34; Sieg-41; NMD-49; Aagaard-69.2; Schou-16; Bruun-9796. Weight: 57.38 gms. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner. Engraver: Johan Blum (obverse). Beautifully struck with excellent details including the lion head on the king's shoulder. The only other example known in private collections which also belonged to Bruun (Sale II, lot 14054) was struck from a different obverse die with NOR in the legend instead of NORVE.
Two small scratches in the obverse right field are presumably contemporary and should be read as the Roman numeral II signifying a Double Taler.
From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
Ex: Georg F. Timm Collection (Copenhagen - 1831) Lot # 906.
Estimate: 25000 - 35000
