Extremely Rare and in Superb Condition
SWEDEN. 16 Mark, 1607. Stockholm Mint. Karl IX. NGC Unc Details--Bent.
Fr-19; KM-25; SM-10; SG-11; Hagander-53; Bruun-11703. Weight: 4.96 gms. Mintmaster: Antoni Grooth, the Elder. Extremely rare and delightfully lustrous coin with a clear strike and a most excellent portrait. The very light bend can hardly be seen on the reverse and the overall condition makes this coin a contender for the best in private hands.
This fascinating piece of Swedish history was struck using gold collected as customs tax. From 1605, for every 100 Dalers worth of goods imported, 10 Rikdaler and 5 Hungarian Gulden were to be paid in tax and the gold coins melted, uncut, into Swedish coins like the present.
From the L.E. Bruun Collection.
