KINGS OF MACEDON. Antigonos I Monophthalmos or II Gonatas (Circa 306-301 BC). Drachm. Uncertain mint in Greece.

Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin.
Rev: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIΓONOY.
Zeus seated left with eagle and sceptre.

Cf. Gorny & Mosch 203/150 (first example); cf. Pecunem 16/152 (second example).

These excessively rare drachms are linked to a series of Alexander-style tetradrachms struck in the name of a king Antigonos (H.A. Troxell, The Peloponnesian Alexanders, ANSMN 17, 1971, pl. 19.1 (Antigonos Gonatas); Head, HN 229 (Antigonos I.)). An attribution to either one of the two kings or a mint is not possible with current knowledge.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 3.96 g.
Diameter: 18 mm.
