He was a leading figure in fight against the Cherokees, leading to the Battle of the Neches. Douglas was a Republic of Texas congressman, charter member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas. He sold supplies to the Texan army and issued paper money, payable at his store in Nacogdoches or in his office in New Orleans.
