ROMAN REPUBLICAN. L. Roscius Fabatus. 64 B.C. AR serrate denarius. 3.8 gm. 18 mm. Rome mint. Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat skin headdress; L ROSCI below, forepart of Pegasus (control mark) behind / Maiden standing right, feeding serpent erect before her; head of Medusa (control mark) to left, FABATI in exergue. Crawford 412/1 (symbols 172). RSC Roscia 3. Near Extremely Fine; high relief strike; nice light toning with traces of iridescence; a few light scratches; reverse particularly well centered. At the annual festival in honor of Juno Sospita at Lanuvium, a virgin was selected to descend into the grotto under the temple to feed the serpent. If she was chaste, she returned safely. If not, she was killed by the serpent. The obverse and reverse symbols relate directly.
