Middlesex 1024. Political and Social Series: Hardy. Æ halfpenny. 7.92 gm. 29 mm. 1794. Bust left of Thomas Hardy TRIED FOR HIGH TREASON around; T. HARDY 1794 below / ACQUITTED | BY HIS | JURY | COUNSEL | HON. T. ERSKINE | W. GIBBS ESQ. Plain edge, not in collar. Uncirculated; red and brown. The piece has been finely lacquered on the obverse, a 19th century practice. Thomas Hardy, a late 18th century political reformer, was secretary of the Corresponding Society, a group pushing for the reform of Parliament to allow more working class representation. He was tried for treason in 1794 and acquitted.
