The piece has been finely lacquered on the obverse, a 19th century practice.Thomas Hardy, a late 18th century political reformer, was secretary of the Corresponding Society, a group pushing for the reform of Parliament to allow more working class representation. He was tried for treason in 1794 and acquitted.
