CHINA. 5 Qian, ND (ca. 1350-68). Toghan Temur (1333-68).
80.08 mm; 115.45 gms. Hartill-19.124; Jen-470; FD-1817; Schjoth-1114. Possibly from the Ji An mint in Jiangxi. "Zhi Zheng Zhi Bao" (Coin of 1350). "Quan Chao Wu Qian" (Equivalent to paper money, five Qian). Cast during a time of economic reform circa 1350, when the attempt was made to replace smaller size coinage with paper money and these larger coins. Due to its inferior manufacture, the paper money soon became too troublesome to redeem and a widespread loss of confidence in the monetary system took hold, resulting in massive price inflation. This RARE and handsome example bears a lovely sea foam patina over nearly all the surfaces. Only a few scrapes to the high points of the rim showing the brass beneath. All characters are clear and legible. VERY FINE.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2000.00
