CHINA. Silver Shanghai Jubilee Medal, 1893.
37.3 mm; 34.4 gms (including ribbon, clasp and hanger). Li-pg. 42-43 (plate example). Steamship with sun setting in distance and a shield inscribed "SHANGHAI / JUBILEE / NOVEMBER / 17. 1898" flanked by a pair of dragons. Across the center of the shield the recipient's name is inscribed: "W. R. KAHLER" who was the proprietor and editor of The Union, a weekly temperance newspaper, as well as having the officially appointed position of Foreman of Shanghai's Hong Kew Volunteer Fire Brigade #2. The reverse features three conjoined municipal shields as well as the date of the opening of Shanghai as a Treaty Port, November 17th, 1843. The edge is inscribed "PRESENTED BY THE SHANGHAI MUNICIPALITY". A red silk moire ribbon with a narrow central white vertical stripe is attached to the medal by a swivel clamp with an additional unembellished silver pinback clasp at the top. Lightly cleaned long ago, now orange and blue tones highlighting the warm steel patina. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
