CHINA. 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens (20 Cents) Pattern, CD (1900). NGC MS-63.
L&M-8a; K-235; WS-0012; Wenchao-75 (rarity four stars). Restrike in silver. Another VERY RARE restrike of the Peking series from original dies. As with the preceding lot, this piece stems from one of the rarest coins series of Imperial China. Although the series began as an attempt to create a central mint series which could circulate alongside the provincial coins, it had to be aborted after the turmoil of the Boxer Rebellion (1900-01). It is known that in addition to very limited quantities of essay or trial sets of this series that were made, a small quantity of both 10 and 20 Cent pieces were officially minted at the Peking (Beijing) mint. These pieces are nevertheless still very rare as they were never released and were likely destroyed or dispersed during the mint's destruction. This particular piece is graded by NGC as an L&M-8, which would make it one of the original strikings done at the mint. However, upon close examination, several areas of die rust can be noted. The rust is indicative of the later made restrikes from the dies "saved" from the mint. In addition to the areas of die rust, the planchet itself is slightly misshapen at twelve o'clock and the edge reeding is a bit malformed and uneven, which would allude to striking at a civilian mint. Nevertheless, this piece is still a solid rarity with excellent eye appeal. The dragon is framed by rich deep green-blue and russet toning and the reverse bears only peripheral toning and strong luster. Numerically superior to the three pieces graded by PCGS as specimens, unfortunately the NGC population is unavailable. NGC MS-63.
