CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), ND (1891). NGC SP-60.
L&M-133; K-26; Y-203; WS-0941. This type represents the first type of Kwangtung coinage struck with corrected legends. The first two issues of Kwangtung came to be known as the "Reversed Pattern" series due to the Chinese and English legends being reversed from what later became standard. However, they were met with general un-acceptance as authorities believed the Chinese and English legends should be alternated to the opposite sides of the coins. The first two "Reversed Pattern" issues never saw mass circulation as they were struck in limited quantities. In fact, the second of the two was struck on a trial basis and not intended for circulation. Minor set backs and a series of minor corrections brought forth an evolution that led to the design of the coin offered here. This type became the first of the Kwangtung series to be mass produced and see extended circulation. The obverse dragon design became known as the "standard design" and became the standard pattern, not only for the Kwangtung mint but for all mints in China that adopted the dragon design. This example, struck in specimen or special presentation proof form, is probably among the first coins struck of this type. Historically very important as it served as the prototype for the rest of the provincial mints. VERY RARE. Sharply struck with mirror surfaces. Deep toning throughout the fields while the devices remain lighter, the reverse is slightly lighter and shows a few more colorful hues indicating that it was probably the side facing down while this coin was being stored. This piece used as a plate example in "Top Chinese Coins" by Chou, Guth and Smith. One of only sixteen graded examples of the specimen strike of this type. NGC SP-60.

W&B Capital Collection.

Estimate: $10000.00- $15000.00
