CHINA. Manchurian Provinces. 3 Mace 6 Candareens (50 Cents), Year 33 (1907). NGC MS-65.
L&M-488; K-256; Y-211; WS-0547. VERY RARE. Struck at the Fengtien mint at Mukden. The silver issues of the "Manchurian Provinces" are something of a special matter. At this time, the provinces of Fengtien, Kirin and Heilungkiang were incorporated, hence the "Manchurian Provinces". As a result, the related coinage became somewhat unified for this region. The last silver issues of Kirin were produced in small quantities in 1908 and 1909, at which point production was superseded by the Manchurian Provinces issue. This eliminated much of the inconsistencies and problems associated with issues from the Kirin mint. For obvious reasons, coinage with the Fengtien inscription ceased, as this mint became in charge of striking the current coinage. Coins of Heilungkiang fell into a different set of circumstances. The only known issues for Heilungkiang are patterns in base metal produced in Germany. Most references suggest the minting of these pieces as the late 1800's; however, it is more likely the Heilungkiang patterns were produced in the early 1900's. The project never came to fruition once the mint at Mukden went into full production of "Manchurian Provinces" coinage. This piece is sharply struck with pin point definition of the dragon's scales and detail of the clouds. Light orange toning is confined to the periphery and a strong satin luster pervades the entire surface. A beautiful rarity which will enhance any collection it graces. Tied with three other examples for the finest certified, one PCGS and two NGC. NGC MS-65.
