ALEXIUS III ANGELUS-COMNENUS (1195-1203). Trachy. Constantinople.

Obv: IC - XC.
Facing bust of Christ Pantokrator.
Rev: Alexius and St. Constantine standing facing, holding labara and a globus cruciger between them.

Sear 2011-13.

This interesting coin is overstruck on an Islamic coin of the Seljuqs of Rum. The few visible parts of the Kufic legend suggest an attribution to the undertype to Kaykhusraw I (1st reign, AH 588-592/AD 1192-1196). It appers that this type of overstrike is unrecorded so far.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 3.46 g.
Diameter: 23 mm.
