Cyprus, uncertain mint (early 5th cent. BC), AR Stater, 10.84g, lion's head right, rev. octopus, Cypriot letters resembling - I in lower field, within shallow incuse square ( Num. Chron. 1935, 553, pl. XVI, 7 - same reverse die; Kraay, ACGC, 1101 var. - lion's head left), an extremely rare issue, known only from the Larnaka hoard of 1933. The octopus closely imitates that on issues of Eretria at the time of the Ionian revolt, which Cyprus briefly participated in. Cleaning scratches round types and small areas of deposit still evident, toned, very fine. Estimate: £2,000.00 - £3,000.00
