SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy (ca. 470-406 BC). AR tetradrachm (25mm, 17.12 gm, 12h). Struck ca. 440-430 BC. Charioteer driving walking quadriga left, holding kentron in right hand, reins in both; Nike flying left above crowning horses; ketos left in exergue / ΣYΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ, head of Arethusa right, wearing earrings and necklace with pendant, hair arranged in tight plaits, tied with two hair bands, and gathered in loose bun at back of head; four dolphins around. Boehringer 596 (V294/R402). HGC 2, 1314 (R1). SNG ANS 194 (these dies). SNG Lockett 947 (these dies). A rather rare and charming hair style for Arethusa. Lovely old toning and mellow metal surfaces. NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5.
