CARIAN ISLANDS. Rhodes. Ca. 205-190 BC. AR tetradrachm (33mm, 17.08 gm, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III the Great; obverse die signed by "Dan(aos)"(?) Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, ΔΑΝ on lion's lip / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left on high-backed throne, holding eagle on extended right hand and lotus-tipped scepter in left, monogram and rose with single bud in left field, P O below throne support. Price 2513. F.S. Kleiner, ANSMN 17, 1971, 106. SNG Berry 320 (same obverse die). Very rare, one of the few examples of a signed die in the Alexander series! Struck on an immense flan, with a clear signature. Scattered surface marks, otherwise Nearly Extremely Fine. The letters Δ-Α-Ν on the lip of the lion's mouth are probably the die-engraver's signature. It has been suggested that ΔΑΝ might be an abbreviation of Danaos, a well-attested Rhodian name originally borne by the legendary founder of the island settlement.

Estimate: 1500-2000 USD
