PHOENICIA. Demetrias by the Sea. Ca. 2nd-1st century BC. Æ 20mm (6.20 gm). Turreted, veiled, and draped bust of Tyche right / Zeus standing left, holding eagle and scepter; ΔΗ to right, date to left, obscured by large circular countermark. HGC 9, 146. Extremely rare! Dark green patina with red earthen fields; obverse partially flattened by countermark. Very Fine. The existence of a city on the Levantine coast called Demetrias by the Sea is deduced from a handful of bronze coins and a single inscribed lead market weight. It may have been founded by the Seleucid king Demetrius I (162-150 BC); a fortified outpost called Straton's Tower was noted by some ancient historians and may be the same place. The outpost was largely abandoned by the 20s BC but was chosen by Herod the Great as the site of his grand new city, Caesarea Maritima, and its harbor, Sebastos.

Estimate: 800-1000 USD
