M. Aburius M. f. Geminus (ca. 132 BC). AR denarius (20mm, 3.90 gm, 11h). Rome. GEM, helmeted head of Roma right; below chin, denomination mark / M . ABVRI, Sol driving, head facing, holding reins and whip, galloping quadriga right; in exergue, ROMA. Crawford 250/1. Sydenham 487. Aburia 6. Deeply struck from fresh dies in perfect metal. An absolute gem, it even says so on the coin! The highest NGC-graded Roman Republican denarius we have ever offered. NGC Gem MS 5/5 - 5/5. The moneyer is thought to be a descendant of M. Aburius, who was tribune of the plebs in 187 BC. Although Jupiter most commonly rides in the quadriga on Roman Republican denarii, here he has been replaced by a figure of Sol, the sun god. As the coin was struck in 132 BC, it is tempting to think that Sol here is used as a symbol for the East. In 133 BC, the kingdom of Pergamon was bequeathed to the Roman people. This kingdom became the first Roman province in Asia.

Estimate: 600-800 USD
