Caligula, with Divus Augustus (AD 37-41). AR denarius (18mm, 3.74 gm, 8h). Lugdunum, AD 40. Obv: C CAESAR AVG GERM PON M TR POT III COS III, laureate head of Caligula right / [DIV]VS AVG PATER PATRIAE, radiate head of Divus Augustus right. RIC 24 (R3). BMCRE 25. CBN 32. RSC 7. Attractively toned. Nearly Extremely Fine / Good Very Fine. Ex Artemide Aste (September 1999), lot 86.Despite being perhaps the worst of all Roman emperors, Caligula's coinage is interesting and attractive. As he had few, if any, real accomplishments to tout, his reverse types place great stress on his blue-blooded lineage. His detailed portrait on this well-struck and attractively toned denarius seems to hint at his cruel, capricious nature, while the reverse depicts his great-grandfather, Augustus. This variety is much scarcer than the corresponding denarius dated to Caligula's first tribunician year (AD 37-8).

Estimate: 5000-7000 USD
