Ancients
Justin II (AD 565-578). AV solidus (21mm, 4.45 gm, 6h). Alexandria(?), possibly dated Indictional Year 10 (AD 576/7). DN I-VSTI-NVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust of Justin facing, holding in right hand small figure of Victory holding wreath on globe, and on left arm shield with horseman motif / VICTORI-A AVCCC I(indictional year?), Constantinopolis seated facing, head turned right, holding spear and globus cruciger, staurogram in left field, •CONOB• in exergue. Sear 347A (Constantinople). DOC --. MIB 14 (Alexandria). Berk 63. A very rare variety. NGC Choice AU 5/5 – 4/5. Ex Stack's (New York, June 1996), lot 87.Though Sear and DO tentatively assign this issue to Constantinople, most other experts have noted it is of different style and fabric than regular issues of the capital and must be assigned to a provincial mint, with Alexandria being the most likely candidate. Almost all the known examples have an I in the spot normally assigned to the officina letter; this would normally be for the 10th officina in a Constantinople issue but it almost certainly has some other meaning on this type, perhaps an indictional date of 10.

Estimate: 1000-1400 USD
