[dd NN hЄRA]CLIЧS ЄT hRA CONTI, crowned and draped busts of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine facing; cross above, exergual line below busts / VICTORIA AVςЧ IΠ, cross potent on three steps; CONOB. Sear 851 (Jerusalem). DOC 187c (Alexandria). MIB 77 (Cyprus). Minor peripheral weakness; lustrous fields. NGC MS 4/5 – 3/5.Ex Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection; M&M (August, 1994), lot 65. There has been much scholarly debate as to the location of the mint for these peculiar solidi of Heraclius. Bellinger and Grierson in DOC placed them in Alexandria, although tentatively, while Hahn opted for a mint in Cyprus. Sear, following Bendall, attributed them to a mint in Jerusalem. Bendall has since revised this attribution, suggested they were struck in mobile military mints (probably in northern Syria, but perhaps in Egypt) that were used to produce coinage for the wars against the Persians in occupied Syria.
