Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1791 PTS-PR AU55 NGC, Potosi mint, KM77, Onza-1084. Partially lustrous with limited wear on the higher points of the design, and well struck with sharp details throughout. Two inconsequential adjustment marks across the bust are mentioned for accuracy's sake. This rare issue featuring the laureate bust of Charles III is peculiar to the Potosi mint and was only used during 1791 for the gold issues. Obviously not a error from the engraver – since all denominations were struck with this design and the 1791 date – it did not comply with the puncheons sent from Madrid for the bust of the new king and was only used for a short time during that year. Four rare one-year types were thus created, among which the 8 Escudos is probably the most iconic and popular, rarely seen in grades approaching Mint State. As such, this finely preserved specimen should attract strong attention.
