Engraved by Monteiro. Obverse: bust of Pedro II facing left, D. PEDRO SEGUNDO IMPER. DO BRAZIL. Reverse: CAMPANHA NAVAL DO RIO DA PRATA E C. DO TONELERO. 17 - 12 - 1851 in three lines. Struck to commemorate Passage of the Tonelero battle during the Platine war of 1851-1852 which opposed the empire of Brazil and its allies against dictators Rosas (Argentina) and Oribe (Uruguay). The Passage of Tonelero battle was a successful engagement of a Brazilian fleet to break through the Argentine defenses in that locale on December 17, 1851. Very scarce and quite impressive. - VC-unl., Meili-108. Copper, 60mm, 115.85g. About Uncirculated, lightly cleaned on the obverse long ago. Obverse: bust of Pedro II facing left, inscription: D. Very scarce and equally impressive as the previous item. - VC-unl., Meili-unl. Silvered lead, 60mm, 110g. Presumably a trial strike of the previous pieces. Uncirculated harshly cleaned. Very rare, only the second specimen seen by the cataloguer in this metal. - VC-unl., Meili-99. Copper, 60mm, 85.97g. About Uncirculated, lightly cleaned. Obverse: bust of Pedro II facing left, inscription: D. PEDRO SEGUNDO IMPER. DO BRAZIL. Reverse: 7-line inscription. Very rare.A most engaging group of massive commemorative medals, rarely offered and in well above average preservation despite the noted defects.
