Theresa Christina Commemorative Medals Quartet, Rio de Janeiro mint. All engraved by Luster. Lot of four medals, as follows:- VC-44 (for a wood specimen), Meili-29. Copper, 60mm, 88.97g. About Uncirculated. Obverse: bust of Empress Theresa Cristina facing right, D. THEREZA CHRISTINA IMPERATRIZ DO BRAZIL. Reverse: 6-line inscription, 1858 date. A medal commissioned by the administrators of the Recolhemento de Santa Theresa, an institution sponsored by the Empress to receive stray abandoned girls.- VC-44 (for a wood specimen), Meili-29. White Metal, 60mm, 146.09.g. Choice about Uncirculated, cleaned. Similar to last but a piefort struck in white metal. - VC-unl., Meili-187. Copper, 60mm, 101.10g. Choice Uncirculated. Obverse: similar to last. Reverse: 7-line inscription, date 15-9-1859. A medal offered to famous Tenor Raphael Mirate by the Sisterhood of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. Mirate started performing in Rio in 1859. The June 16, 1859 issue of the Revista Popular includes the review Cronica da Quinzena by Carlos Jose do Rosario complaining to the administrators of the theatre that the premises during Mirate's performance were not comfortable despite the high price of the tickets. - VC-unl., Meili-188. Copper, 60mm, 92.60g. Extremely Fine. Obverse: similar to last. Reverse: 10-line inscription, date 26-8-1860. Struck for the director of the Music Conservatory Francisco Angel da Silva by the Sisterhood of Nossa Senhora da Piedade.The copper pieces rare, the white metal very rare. Another impressive group of these large 60mm that would be most difficult to duplicate and thus a rare opportunity for the collector of these elusive issues.
