Pedro II Medal Quartet, Rio de Janeiro mint. Engraved by Luster. Lot of four medals, as follows: - VC-131, Meili-102. Copper, 34mm, 17.27g. Uncirculated. Obverse: bust of Pedro II, D. PEDRO II IMP. DO BRAS. Reverse: 5-line inscription, date 1861. Commemorative medal for the inauguration of the Imperial Dock. The Imperial Dock was inaugurated by Pedro II and the empress on September 22, 1861 after a long delay of 37 years. The contemporary record in the O Argos da Provincia de Santa Catharina (page 2 in edition of October 7, 1861) duly mentions two gold medals of this type presented to the Imperial couple, along a few silver and white metal specimens distributed to the public. The latter reference might be to silvered copper specimens since no white metal examples have been confirmed by the author.- VC-131, Meili-102. Silver (SG 10.30), 34mm, 26.15g. About Uncirculated. Similar to last. - VC-unl. Meili-168. Copper, 46mm, 45.24g. Uncirculated and attractively toned. Obverse: bust of Pedro II, facing left, D. PEDRO II IMP. DO BRAS. Reverse: circular inscription, centers blank. An undated (ca.1860-1888) copper award medal for the Fine Arts Exhibition. A comment on the approximate dates assigned to this copper piece is due here: the 1860 date appears assigned to the obverse puncheon for this medal in the 1906 Spink Numismatic Circular article/checklist on Luster's works (SNC Vol. 14, pages 9281-9282) and is probably accurate since that list was done in collaboration with Meili. The 1884 date is the last we have found engraved in one of these 46mm large award medals - it is offered in this sale as the unique gold award medal to Thomas Driendl - but awards of similar ones are recorded for the exhibitions held until 1888. - VC-unl. Meili-168. Silver, 46mm, 52.95 g. VF, tooled on reverse. Similar to last. The awardee's hand engraved name has been effaced yet traces of the 1876 date remain. A silver award medal for the 1876 Fine Arts Exhibition thus one of only two for that year: the annals of the 1876 Exposicao de Bellas Artes allow us to conclude this is either the medal awarded to Estevao Silva (famous Afro-Brazilian painter) or to one Ulrich Steffen. Meili references one such silver medal awarded for the 1867 Exhibition. The first attractive and scarce, the second rare, the third unusually choice and thus scarce, the last very rare.
