Pedro II Commemorative Medals Quartet, Rio de Janeiro mint. Engraved by Ernesto (obverse of the first)/ Nery (reverse of the first) and by F. J. P. (the last three). List of four medals, as follows:- VC-unl., Meili-unl. Copper, 61mm, 101.68g. Extremely Fine. Obverse: bust of Pedro II facing left, Reverse: SS. MM. II. VOLTAO DE SUA VIAGEM A EUROPA. 1 DE ABRIL DE 1872, view of the Arsenal de Marinha da Corte and the Douro steamship. Struck to commemorate the return of Pedro II from his trip to Europe. This trip was important in establishing Brazil's foreign image. It was chronicled by several contemporary publications, including the charming Apontamentos Sobre a Picaresca Viagem do Imperador de Rasilb (not a typo! but an anagram of Brasil) Pela Europa by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, considered the first comic book published in Portugal.- VC-unl., Meili-66. Copper, 54mm, 65.90g. About Uncirculated, minor edge bumps. Obverse: bust of Pedro II facing left, DON PEDRO SEGUNDO IMPERADOR DO BRAZIL, PROTECTOR DAS ARTES E DA INDUSTRIA. Reverse: 4a EXPOSICAO NACIONAL 1875 in three lines, two telegraphs in wreath. Commemorative medal for the 1875 National Exhibition. - VC-unl., Meili-67. Copper, 54mm, 64.95g. Uncirculated. Obverse: similar to last. Reverse: circular legend QUARTA EXPOSICAO NACIONAL, AO MERITO in wreath. A similar commemorative medal of different design on the reverse.- VC-unl., Meili-68. Copper, 54mm, 64.40g. Uncirculated. Obverse: similar to last. Reverse: legend similar to last of slightly different style, beehive in wreath. A third, of yet another different design on the reverse.All very scarce, the last two choice and most attractive.
