Pedro II Pair of Commemorative Medals 1874, Rio de Janeiro mint Engraved by Carneiro. Lot of two medals, as follows:VC-unl., Meili-157. Copper, 29mm, 11g. About Uncirculated. Obverse: Liberty bust, circular legend in Latin PETRO DUCE ET AUSPICE PETRO (a reference to Pedro II, leader and follower of Pedro I) CRAS INGENS ITERABIMUS AEQUOR ("Tomorrow we will take up our course again over the huge [sea]" a quote from Horace). Reverse: circular legend INSTITUTO DOS BACHAREIS EM LETRAS * BRASIL * and DECRETO DE 22 DE JULHO DE 1874 in five lines. A cancellation stamp "NULLO" appears on both sides. Meili-172 is a 1862-dated medal with the same cancellation mark so it is clear that unused medals were canceled at some point.VC-unl., Meili-unl. Gold, 29mm, 19.86g. About Uncirculated. Similar to last but struck in gold. While the included collector's tag indicates these medals were struck to commemorate the creation of the Instituto dos Bachareis de Letras, said institution was founded per Imperial decree No. 3270 of May 16, 1864. The medal appears instead to have been issued to commemorate the decree of July 22, 1874, which authorized Afonso Celso de Assis Figueiredo Junior (1860-1938) a later famous politician) to enter any of the Faculties of the Empire, despite his young age. Two other decrees were issued on that date of July 22, 1874, both granting their respective rights to two inventors: one Marcos Armando for a device for the unloading of merchandises and one Manoel Antonio de Souza for a device to bake bread, but these seem unrelated to the present medal in the cataloger's opinion.

Estimate: 2000-3000 USD
