Pedro II Horticultural Exposition Commemorative Medals Quartet, Rio de Janeiro mint. VC-124 (for a specimen dated 1885), Meili-84 (for specimens dated 1876, 1877, 1884). Engraved by Carneiro. Lot of four medals for successive Horticultural Expositions held at Petropolis as follows:- Copper, 46mm, 43.11g. Lustrous Uncirculated. Obverse: bust of Princess Isabel facing left. Reverse: SEGUNDA EXPOSICAO HORTICOLA DE PETROPOLIS 20 DE JANEIRO DE 1876 in five lines. Struck for the second Exposition. - Silver, 47mm, 51.83g. Uncirculated, lightly cleaned on obverse. Similar in design to the previous medal, only dated April 8, 1877. Struck for the third Exposition. - Copper, 47mm, 41.52g. Similar to last, albeit with an older bust on the obverse and dated April 12, 1885. Struck for the fifth Exposition.- Copper, 47mm, 41.86g. Choice Uncirculated. Similar to last but dated March 21, 1886. Struck for the sixth Exposition. The first Horticultural exposition was inaugurated in Petropolis on February 2, 1875. Sponsored by Princess Isabel and her husband Gaston d'Orleans, the Count of Eu. It was originally held in the Koblentz parc of Petropolis. Shortly thereafter, the count of Eu commissioned the building of the Cristal Palace of Petropolis, inspired by the Cristal Palace of Porto, which was inaugurated in 1884 and held the aforementioned Expositions from then on. Isabel had started collecting orchids around 1868 and took the organization of the event quite seriously; in a personal letter dated March 27, 1886 to Antonio Martins Pinheiro Filho, the Count of Eu commented that his wife was "personally supervising along with her friends the individual order of the flowers and other objects that are being presented in the Horticultural Exposition of Petropolis" (at the time, the 6th Exposition, see the last item in this group). The copper pieces very scarce, the silver one very rare and unlisted in the recent work of Claudio Amato "Livro das Medalhas do Brasil", the 1886-dated piece particularly pleasant. A rare and desirable group of impressive commemorative medals.

Estimate: 2000-3000 USD
