Pedro II 1879 award gold medal to Marc Ferrez UNC - Tooled, Rio de Janeiro mint, Engraved by Luster. VC-unl., Meili-unl. (cf Meili-169 for a copper specimen). Gold, 34mm, 27.57 grams. Mint State yet tooled on the obverse to remove spots. Obverse: D. PEDRO II IMP. DO BRAS., bust of Pedro II facing left. Reverse: EXPOSICAO GERAL DA ACADEMIA DAS BELLAS ARTES DO RIO DE JANEIRO. A with the hand engraved inscription "MARCOS FERREZ 1879" within a wreath. Marcos Ferrez (1843-1923) was a distinguished French-Brazilian photographer, active between 1865 and 1918. Named as the photographer of the Geological Commission of the Brazilian Empire headed by Canadian geologist Charles Frederick Hartt, Ferrez was the first to photograph the Botocudo Indian tribe. Unique and the only one of this size given at the 1879 Exhibition: although five additional gold medals were awarded in the 1879 exposition, those are recorded as "1st gold medals" (Primeira Medalha de Ouro) and were of the larger 46mm size (see our offering of the gold award medal to Thomas Driendl). The annals of the aforementioned exposition duly record the present medal awarded to Ferrez as "gold medal" (medalha de ouro) instead of "1st gold medal". In the original case and a prize of Brazilian numismatics.

Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
