Pedro II gold Academy of Arts Award Medal ND (1881) AU - Surface Hairlines, Rio de Janeiro mint, VC-73, Meili-167. 27mm/13.97 grams. Obverse: bust of Pedro II facing left, engraved by Cristian Luster (C. L. F. for Cristian Luster Fecit). Reverse: ACADEMIA DAS BELLAS ARTES DO RIO DE JANEIRO and AO GENIO E A APLICACAO in four lines encircled by wreath. Of Danish origin, Luster was hailed by none other than Kurt Prober as the most skillful Brazilian engraver. Some interesting facts about him can be read in the description of lot 30160 in our 9/2014 Signature Auction. The date of the particular medal can be pinpointed as 1881 since famous painter Manoel Teixeira de Rocha (1863-1941) presented the specimen awarded to him in the 1881 Exposition of History of Brazil (see entry 20031 in the Catalogo da Exposição de Historia do Brazil (1881), a reference also found in VC and Meili). The missing link – not mentioned by either of these two references – is that Teixeira entered the Academy on that same year of 1881 (at only 18 years old!) and thus could not have been awarded the medal earlier. He would be named professor extraordinarius of the Lyceo de Artes e Officios on September 28, 1883, at the precocious age of 20. Very rare in gold, with 5-6 specimens confirmed by the cataloger.

Estimate: 2000-3000 USD
