Brazil
Pedro II 1884 gold Award Medal to Thomas Driendl UNC - Hairlines, VC-unl. Meili-unl. (cf. Meili-168 for copper and silver specimens). Gold, 46mm, 85.95 grams. Uncirculated with surface hairlines, a minute edge bump above "PEDRO II" at 10 o'clock on the obverse mentioned for accuracy's sake. Thomas Georg Driendl (1849-1916) was a German-born Brazilian painter and architect and among the most important paisagists of Brazil in the 19th century. He was awarded this massive gold medal during the Brazil National Exposition of 1884, along with three other artists including Georg Grimm, all listed as "1st Gold Medal" (Primera Medalha de Ouro). Excessively rare and possibly unique since it's the only confirmed example of these large 46mm gold medals traced by the cataloger. In its original case and in most engaging preservation despite the noted defects, this massive and historical gold specimen should attract serious collectors' interest.
Estimate: 10000-15000 USD
