Republic Commemorative Medals Trio, Rio de Janeiro mint. Engraved by Girardet. Lot of three commemorative medals for the construction of the Avenida Central (currently av. Rio Branco) in Rio de Janeiro under President Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves, as follows:- VC-220. Copper, 50.5mm, 57.74g. Obverse: busts of President Rodrigues Alves, of Industry Minister Lauro Muller and of Chief Engineer Paulo de Frontin in wreaths, inscriptions with the dates of the decree authorizing the works (18-9-1903), of the start of the works (8-3-1904) and of the inauguration of the Avenida Central (15-11-1905). Reverse: view of the Avenida Central, two cherubins and dates of presidential period of President Rodrigues Alves. - VC-unl. Silver, 50.5mm, 60.94g. About Uncirculated. Similar to last but struck in silver.- VC-unl. Gold, 50.5mm, 89.57g. Mint State with slight cabinet friction. Similar to last but struck in gold.Augusto Giorgio Girardet was an Italian engraver who arrived in Brazil in 1891. He worked for the Rio de Janeiro mint and was also given the position of professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts (previously the Imperial Academy). He would become the greatest Brazilian medalist of the 20th century. The copper and silver pieces scarce, the gold piece extremely rare and only the second piece seen by the cataloguer. A most desirable set.
