George V gold Sovereign 1916-C MS64 NGC, Ottawa mint, KM20. A spectacular selection and also one of the finest we've seen in years, displaying fabulous golden-amber color with subtle original patina and underlying full mint bloom. Due to an exceptional strike, the highpoints of the devices are as crisp as the day they were struck and the surrounding fields are remarkably clear of any mentionable abrasions. An altogether superior offering that delivers on both quality and appearance, currently among the top certified examples of this significant date, and an undeniable conditional rarity.Charlton postulated that the rarity of the 1916-C Sovereign may be due to melting, as there are currently believed to be about 50 pieces extant. Another scenario likens the mintage of this scarce date to have been "lost at sea on its way to England during World War I, as part of an international settlement." Regardless the reason, the fact that very few pieces have been available in the marketplace within the last ten years confirms the idea that only a limited amount exist. For the collector who has long been searching for a nearly-gem example of this key to the George V Canadian Sovereign series, that opportunity has arrived, and it may be as fleeting as the existence of the coin itself.

Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
