Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1754 So-J XF40 NGC, Santiago mint, KM3, Onza-648. A well detailed example with even, limited wear on the higher points defining the grade and an attractive color. This very scarce subtype - labeled as "tipo B" in the Onza book and "reduced-diameter" by Carlos Jara in his work on the early issues of the Santiago mint - was struck between 1753-1758 and is easily identified by its reduced diameter compared to the earlier 1750-1753 issues and the different design of the shield around the golden fleece. A good type coin of an issue not represented in the "La Luz" shipwreck and thus virtually unobtainable in Mint State.

Estimate: 2500-3000 USD
