Republic Souvenir Peso 1897 MS65 NGC, Struck by Gorham Manufacturing Company (Providence, RI), KM-XM2. The close date/star below variety, with the "M" initial (for Martiny) under the palm on the reverse. Gem Uncirculated with satiny surfaces and sharply defined features. Actually the first circulation type struck (instead of the "PAT. 97." variety usually labeled as such) as can be concluded from the detailed article presented by Emilio Ortiz at the ANS' 1999 COAC. Only 858 pieces struck between July 8 and July 18, 1897, of which 30 were subsequently destroyed on the following September 17 thus understandably very elusive in this select grade.
Estimate: 1500-2000 USD
