Republic Souvenir PAT. 97 Peso 1897 MS66 NGC, Struck by Gorham Manufacturing Company (Providence, RI), KMXM1, EMO-10A 4G/2C. Superb Gem Brilliant Uncirculated with full mint luster and delicate golden toning over virtually flawless surfaces - as expected for the designation. Research by Emilio Ortiz ("Money of the Caribbean", C.O.A.C. 1999, pages 263-318) gives a mintage figure of only 4,856 pieces for this "PAT. 97" type, all on August 20, 1897. With that scant mintage, it is no surprise that true Mint State examples are very elusive while Choice Mint State examples are decidedly rare. Gem certified coins such as the present coin are extremely are and among the most desirable items in the Cuban series. The current example is among the top three examples seen by the cataloguer, with only one certified finer (at MS67) and few if any matching its eye-appeal. An important and most desirable offering, worthy of inclusion in the finest cabinet of Cuban coins, and the finest offered by us of this popular and iconic type.

Estimate: 5000-7000 USD
