Louis XII (1498-1515) Teston ND (1514) VF Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Paris mint, from 6 April 1514, Ciani-920, Dup-660. + : LVDOVICVS : D : G : FRANCORV : REX :, crowned bust right, a pellet beneath the 18th letter / + : XPS : VINCIT : XPS : REGNAT : XPS : IPT :, crowned arms within polylobe, a pellet beneath the 18th letter. A piece with some corrosion damage from the past, now retoned. Very rare, these pieces were minted only in the last 8 months of Louis' life. He died on the 1st of Janaury in 1515 and his successor, Francois I, was crowned on the 25th of the same month. Presumably, the minting of these would have ceased shortly after Francois' coronation when dies for an issue in his name would have been produced. While examples of Testons in Louis' name minted in Milan for circulation in Italy appear at auction every few years or so, we have been unable to locate an example of this French issue sold at auction in the past 20 years. A true prize for the Renaissance enthusiast.

Estimate: 7000-8000 USD
