Mainz - St. Alban. Abbey Goldgulden 1780 AU53 NGC, KM17, Fr-1694. A rare issue, depicting the city's namesake St. Alban, post-decapitation, with his head in his hands. The obverse design, also alluring, shows a leftward walking donkey inside an ornate shield. Although it cannot be confirmed, tradition states that when the provost of the seminary of St. Alban's requested minting rights for its client city of Bodeheim from Emperor Maximilian, he jested that the coins must portray an ass, a request which the provost apparently took literally. Very lightly circulated with excellent remaining flash and almost no marks.
Estimate: 2000-2500 USD
